A while back there was mentioned in the Access World magazine on www.afr.org a product called the Professor made by Telex. It was supposed to be available this summer. I wrote the company for more information on this item, but just got an e-mail directing me to their pretty generic web site. I haven't been able to find any other information on this product anywhere else, so I thought I'd ask if anyone here has and if so, what have they heard?

Thanks,
Cristobal

How do you expect to be able to read any replies if you have 43 people on ignore? Just wondering... Star

Because, I only log in when I want to post something. Otherwise, I just browse the site without doing so and thus I am able to read everything. Does that answer your question?

Wow!!! 43!!!??? That's a bit extreme!!!! But to answer your question, no, I haven't heard anything more about it.

I've heard of the Telex Professor and in fact, I want one! *smiles* We had recieved the LS&S Group catalog of products, and Mom told me about the Telex Professor which was apparently listed in there.! It says the price they're selling it for is like $200.00. The weird thing though, is when I went to the website for the LS&S Group to look for the Telex Professor there, I couldn't find it. And I also went to the website of I guess whoever the creators of it were, but it didn't have much else other than a discription. It does sound like a really cool product though, even though it's a desktop one, but I like that it can play different formats of CD's and has presetable or at least easy-to-set FM radio. *smiles*

OK. Not sure If anyone knows about this yet, but I just found out that the Telex Professor is on the market now! Well, I found two places for sure that carry it. ILA carries it, their website being www.independentliving.com, and RFB&D carries it, their site being www.rfbd.org. RFB&D has a 20-dollar rebate offer for people who buy the Professor between now and April 21. That doesn't seem like much, but that's $20 to spend to whatever else. *smiles*

I went to the CSUN conference that was held in LA this past week. They had quite a bunch of intresting items on display. I found the professor being shown at the Telex booth as well as the Maxi Aids booth. After playing around with it and checking it's features I went ahead and bought it through Maxi Aids. They were selling it for $349 along with the $20 rebate. Where as Telex was selling it at $399 with the $20 rebate. I will be receiving it at the end of this week. Oh, free shipping too. I look forward to using it.

What exactly this profesor is? What exactly can people do with it? Is it a software on the computer or is it an outstanding thing?

nikosdemetriou, the Telex Professor is a cool thing. *smiles* It is a machine that has a digital book and MP3 player, a 2- and 4-track cassette player, and radio. So it is basically like one of those common readios with a CD and cassette player. The difference from the other common ones though is that it is designed to play those new Daisy books that are coming out now. The Daisy books are are disigned so that a person can navigate and read books more easily by letting them read word by word, paragraph by paragraph, page by page, etc, almost the way you'd be able to read something off the computer I think, but of course the machines probably have different commands for it than a computer would. Anyway, besides that, like I mentioned, you can also play MP3's, and then of course, you can also play the regular cassettes and the ones that have 4 sides. And with the radio, it has where you cand change the stations by entering the numbers in like you would do on a TV remote, or you can also preset the stations you want. Oh, and I forgot to mention, the Daisy player also has where you can set bookmarks for it also. And this machine talks through everything too, even telling you what radio station you're on.! I haven't seen one of these machines for myself, but I'm hoping to get one if I can. Cristobal, it would be cool if you ould let us know how you like it when you receive yours. I think RFB&D is selling it for the same price ILA is, so that's cool. I think my favorite feature would be the radio, because a lot of regular radios are coming out with where you have to press the buttons to get to where you want to go, and I think it's actually quicker with the knob, or even better with this if you know which channels you usually listen to anyway because you probably already know the numbers for it. Also, the fact that it plays MP3's is also cool. *smiles* Although the Professor probably isn't small enough to take everywhere, I'm sure they'll later come out with one that is, but I would still want this one. *smiles*

It's very interesting. And with all these features i think the price is very good.

HOld on ...
fm radio you can get for $10 or $20 probably and you could get a tv plug-in card for the computer for $106 (e.g.) that plays fm radio. You can get a Daisy book reader for free if you pay $50 to sign up with www.bookshare.org for example, a decent one and I really hope they're phasing out the cassettes.
If this Telex Professor thing is very small or light weight I'd say it's cool, but to me the price tag just seems really high for what you're getting. A normal cd player that plays mp3s costs around $30 to $50 at the most, you can get the casseette recorder for under $100, why is this thing $400 then?
A brand new Acer laptop, that is actually good, is $499.
Not saying it isn't good but, to me, it just seems like a bit of a rip off, but if this is the only way to read Daisy books on the go I guess I'd have to look at it.
cheers

A little off topic, but you can get a free daisy player from bookshare if you sign up? Like a daisy player that you can take with you? Wow, it speaks the radio stations; now, that feature sounds cool!
